How to Make a Small Room Feel Bigger

Whether you’re a college student wanting to get a little more out of your first dorm room or just trying to make the best out of that not-quite-big-enough odd room in your house, learning how to make a small room bigger can transform any space from a cramped, hole-in-the-wall to a fully renovated, functional space.

1. Use a rug with a small pattern

Any project starts with a good foundation. In this case, we’re starting with the floor! Double check your rug for large prints - ones that will quickly fill up the space and make it feel even smaller than it is. Instead, opt for small-printed rugs or tile to open up the floor and make it feel wider than before.

2. Use light colors.

In a small room, dark colors quickly overpower a space. Keeping the room light with neutrals and bright colors makes a small space feel bigger than it is.

3. Paint your ceiling a lighter color.

Don’t be afraid to reach big - literally. While this one may seem ambitious, it has dramatic effect. Painting the ceiling a slightly lighter shade than the walls is a sure-fire way to open up the space and make your walls look higher than they are. For college students, using a peel-and-stick wallpaper is a good way to get around dorm-room restrictions.

4. Less is more

The simplest way to make a small space bigger is to have less stuff! Keep the items in the room, especially large furniture pieces, to a bare minimum. Eyes prefer places to rest over visual clutter, and in a small room, things can get cluttered pretty quickly!
